Episode eight: Chelsea flower show 2017
I spent two days at the Chelsea flower show, and managed to meet a few fellow houseplant fans, and grab interviews with some of the experts displaying their plants.
This week's guests ... and the plants we discussed
- Streptocarpus grower Rex Dibley of Dibleys Nurseries (on Twitter as @dibleys). We discussed Streptocarpus Crystal series, Streptocarpus 'Polka-Dot Purple', Streptocarpus 'Harlequin Dawn', and Begonia sizemoreae.
- Stan Griffin and Vicki Newman of Craig House Cacti. We discussed Popsy the cactus who is a Parodia warasii and Euphorbia milii aka crown of thorns.
- Sam Fielding from the Orchid Society of Great Britain. One of the orchids mentioned was the baby in the cradle orchid (Anguloa).
- Manoj Malde who designed the Under a Mexican Sky garden. We talked about the succulents in his garden, including Agave parryi var. truncata (the artichoke agave), feltbush (Kalanchoe beharensis), Echeveria 'Blue Prince', Agave attenuata, Agave americana, dragon tree (Dracaena draco) and in the terrarium, Echeveria glauca and Tillandsia. Find Manoj on Twitter as @Manoj_Malde.
I knew you'd all want to see a picture of Popsy, so here she is in the centre frame on the Craig House Cactus stand, alongside a few of her friends. I am delighted to say that this stand won a silver-gilt medal, which was richly deserved! Well done to the Craig House team!
This shot also shows some of the wonderful terrarium displays put on by Stan and Vicki to inspire your own cactus collection.
And keep listening, because we'll be devoting a whole episode of On The Ledge to cacti and succulents very soon, Including an interview with Katherine Price, author of new houseplant book Get Plants.
